Gambling and the Military: Cultural Considerations for Care Providers

Session Description: Cultural sensitivity and awareness is a key element of evidenced based and ethical care. This presentation will review military and veteran culture as it relates to problem gambling, aiming to increase competencies and best practice care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify elements of military culture as particular risk factors for the development of gambling problems.
  • Participants will learn several strategies to assist military affiliated persons, specifically as it relates to mental health, addictions, and gambling issues.

Dr. Heather Chapman is a clinical psychologist, Director of the Gambling Treatment Program at the Cleveland VA Medical Center, the leader of gambling treatment, training consultation and research for the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense. After 30 years of work in the gambling field, Dr. Chapman was recently honored by the National Council on Problem Gambling with The Robert Custer Lifetime Award for Direct Service. Dr. Chapmanā€™s aim is as a research practitioner, helping people struggling with gambling, developing interactive, and dynamic tools to assist and maintain change.
