R. Dean Boyd

R. Dean Boyd is the former Director of Technology for the Hanor Company and a Technical Leader for the Triumph Foods group. He is an adjunct Professor of Animal Nutrition at North Carolina and Iowa State Universities. Dean earned his B.S. in Animal Science from Colorado State University and his M.S. (Animal Nutrition) and Ph.D. (Nutritional Physiology and Biochemistry) degrees from the University of Nebraska, studying under Dr. Ernie Peo. He has 40 years of service in animal nutrition, in both academic and private sectors, with a record of distinction in research and integration of science into practice. His research team improved our understanding of energy and amino acid nutrition, ingredient mitigation of disease stress on growth, and the profound life-time effects of low weaning age. Dean’s team proved that seasonal infertility could be alleviated by specific amounts of essential fatty acids. His growth assay for calibrating ingredient net energy was helpful to wider adoption of the NE system in pigs in North America. He has published 110 refereed articles, books and book chapters during his career. These include reports for the National Academy of Sciences and the Gates Foundation. His publications appear in 16 scholarly journals, with coauthors from 28 academic institutions and 13 corporations. The American Association of Swine Veterinarians honored him as the Howard Dunne Memorial Lecturer and the Australian Pig Science Association named him the Dunkin Memorial Lecturer. Dean also received the AFIA Award in Nonruminant Nutrition Research from the American Society of Animal Science.
