The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is excited to offer the Stacked Deck problem gambling prevention program to Integrated Provider Network (IPN) prevention contractors.

Stacked Deck: A Program to Prevent Problem Gambling is the only curriculum proven effective in changing youth gambling behaviors. Stacked Deck explores how adolescents who gamble online and in their communities often have little to no awareness that gambling can become an addiction. Participants will discuss how limited understanding of technology may be shaping the human experience, such as by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to create persuasive messages to keep people online and engaged. Coupling the Pandemic with the legalization of sports betting and various forms of online betting, emphasizing the importance of addressing the public health concern of youth problem gambling is a priority.

Prevention Specialists participating in Stacked Deck will learn how adolescents that experience problems with gambling may also be dealing with co-occurring needs such as Problematic Interactive Media Use (PIMU) that includes gaming, social media, pornography, and information seeking on the internet. This training will help Prevention Specialists understand the importance of discussing shared risk and protective factors from a Bio-Psycho-Social Plus framework that now includes technology and how to get buy-in from stakeholders.

The population of focus for this training is anyone providing direct prevention services and prevention supervisors funded through the IPN grant

After completing the training, the participant will be able to:

• Identify risk and protective factors for developing and preventing problem gambling and PIMU
• Describe the impact gambling and digital media can have on adolescents
• Identify legal gambling, illegal gambling, and unregulated gray area gambling
• Understand specific prevention strategies to implement within communities to impact attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and behaviors in the area of problem gambling and PIMU
• Learn strategies to engage stakeholders in the Stacked Deck curriculum
• Be able to teach the Stacked Deck curriculum
