Understanding Iowa’s High Cancer Rates & Environmental Risk Factors: A Research and Community Engagement Initiative

Description: The Iowa Environmental Council, Harkin Institute, and Iowa Farmer’s Union have launched an initiative to investigate environmental pollution and exposure-related risk factors contributing to Iowa’s increasing cancer rates. This presentation will outline progress on the initial phases of this project: an academic literature review and community listening sessions across Iowa.

Author Bio: Colleen Fowle is the Water Program Director with the Iowa Environmental Council. She earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Math from Buena Vista University, a Master of Science degree in Water Resources from Iowa State, and a Master of Arts in Secondary STEM Education from Drake University. Her work bridges the scientific community, the general public, and local and state decision-makers by translating complex scientific information into accessible content for education, outreach, and advocacy purposes.
