Author Bio: Dr. Jesus Gomez-Velez is an Associate Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and a member of IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering at the University of Iowa. His research explores the movement, accumulation, and transformation of water, energy, and matter in complex natural and engineered systems, examining their effects on humans and ecosystems. He uses field experiments, environmental observations, numerical modeling, data science, and machine learning to reach these aims. Before joining the University of Iowa, Jesus was a Senior Research Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Environmental Science Division and served as an Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Science, M.S. degrees in Hydrology and Applied Mathematics from New Mexico Tech, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the National University of Colombia at Medellín. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the USGS in Reston, VA.
