Aquifer Vulnerability Mapping: A New Risk-Based Approach for Black Hawk County, Iowa

Description: Groundwater vulnerability assessments can guide land use and resource planning efforts in Iowa. A new aquifer vulnerability index was developed for Black Hawk County, Iowa, that included layers of groundwater recharge and vertical travel time, pollution risk and groundwater use. Mapping elements, results and implications are highlighted in this presentation.

Author Bio: Keith Schilling is State Geologist and Director of the Iowa Geological Survey at the University of Iowa. He received his PhD in geology from the University of Iowa and his MS in water resources from Iowa State University. Over his 25-year career at the geological survey Keith has published extensively on Iowa’s surface and groundwater resources and water quality.
