Dr. Paola Contessa

Dr. Contessa is the Assistant Director of Research at Delsys and Altec Inc., the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of wearable sensors for human movement sciences. She received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Padova (Italy) in 2010. Before joining Delsys and Altec, she held several positions at Boston University (USA) including Research Scientist at the NeuroMuscular Research Center and Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training of Sargent College. At Delsys and Altec Inc., Dr. Contessa collaborates with a team of engineers and scientists to develop sensor systems and signal processing algorithms and apply them to improve our knowledge of human movement in health and disease. Her research Interests include analysis of human movement, EMG, motor unit decomposition, motor control, muscle force generation strategies, modeling and signal processing. She has given dozens of scientific presentations on sensor technology and signal processing techniques to investigate and assess the biomechanics of human movement and neuromuscular activation. She currently leads the organization of scientific gatherings on topics of motor control in biomechanics as part of the Motor Control Technical Group of ISB.
